I also have two long low shelves in the dining room that I'm sure were intended for displaying the nice china - they are full of cookbooks (also cataloged). Let me be clear - I'm a psychology major - I KNOW I have a problem! :-) I want to alphabatize each section by author next. There's also several overflowing shelves in the hutch for "Read Next" books. I even have a shelf labeled for books to be cataloged on my desk hutch. Another 2 bookshelves in the family room house biography & memoirs, writing, and author collections Woolf (Virginia), Cameron (Julia), Goldberg (Natalie), and Oates (Joyce Carol). I have 2 bookshelves in my office for book swap/trade/sell, business & money, non-fiction, reference, and poetry. I've also got shelves in the living room built-ins for movies, games, and photographs (albums). I saw it somewhere and just loved the idea. One of my projects this year was to make labels for the all the shelves in the house out of old scrabble tiles. All shelved by category art, classics, fiction, gardening, health, history & science, hobbies, home, kids (for when the grandkids come over), mexico, misc, oversized, pyschology, travel & nature are all in the living room built-ins next the fireplace. I tend to be a little behind in the shelving department and they end up in stacks all over my office. Now it is part the joy of getting "new" books - getting them all scanned in, noted, and properly shelved. When I firt got the software, it took me about a year to get my entire library scanned (you get a free barcode scanner with the software). I have hundreds of CDs that I would love to catalog too, but haven't - yet. I bundled and bought all 3 when I first bought it.

I went to the website and now I'm drooling over the upgrade! Also, you can buy software for your music and video as well. It was inexpensive (only $40 now) and very user friendly.
If you have a book buying problem - if you can call it that - then you may just want to try out Libib for yourself.I've been using Readerware for about 5 years and I (this part is in a sing-songy voice) LOVE IT. Libib is an excellent tool for organization and it has helped my family immensely.
That's not really something I care about, but it's there if you want it. There's even a community aspect to Libib similar to Goodreads, so you can see what your friends have read or purchased. You can make your libraries public, so people can follow you. 5,000 individual items is a big cap, more than enough for most people. You can create up to 100 libraries in the free tier, and you can even document your movies, video games, and music. I highly recommend this software to any of you book lovers out there. It definitely helps with the rediscovery of those things you'd forgotten about. And Libib's clean interface on desktop and mobile makes perusing your home library super easy.
Now, when we find a book out in the wild that intrigues us, we can easily check to see if we already have it. It took quite a while, but it was a fun project. My wife and I finally managed to complete our library inventory, all while purging a ton of books in the process.

Later, you can download book covers from the internet and add them to the database if blank covers prove bothersome (I'm right there with you). You can search by ISBN which works almost every time, or you can add books on your own by manually inputting the information. Sometimes, Libib has trouble finding books and their metadata based on the barcode alone.
